North Dakota girls swimming and diving championships: Spartan surprise, North 8th-grader Roche wins 100 breaststroke

BISMARCK – A Fargo North eighth-grader made a big splash at the North Dakota state girls swimming and diving championships Saturday.

Ellie Roche won the 100 breaststroke and was second in the individual medley for the Spartans. Her sister, Emily, took a second in the 100 butterfly and sixth in the 50 free for the Spartans, who finished third as a team.

“It was really fun,” Ellie Roche said. “We were actually just hoping to get in top five overall, and we got third, so we were really happy.”

Although they won just one event – the 200 freestyle relay – Bismarck Century claimed its second straight team championship. Powered by 10 top-four finishes in individual swimming events, the Patriots amassed 368.5 points, leaving them comfortably ahead of runner-up Grand Forks Red River with 300.

It was the third state title in Century’s history.

“It’s a sense of achievement,” Century coach Loic Joseph said. “When you work 13 weeks for two days, it’s a hard thing to believe, but this is all worth it right now.”

Fargo South’s Ashley Kankelfritz was first in diving, while West Fargo’s Danica Dutt cut two seconds off her prelim time to win the fly.

“Yesterday it wasn’t a very good race, but today I just felt 10 times better,” said Dutt, a freshman.

Mandan, which placed ninth, was led by Kayli Johnson, who took fifth in the 100 fly.

It was also a banner day for Red River’s Erin Grabanski. Grabanski won both her individual events, the 200 individual medley (2:08.76) and the 100 backstroke (57.83). Grabanski also swam a leg on two victorious relays, the 200 medley and the 400 free relay.

Grabanski, who was named senior athlete of the year, also led the Roughriders to their best finish ever as a team.

Century’s sole win came in the 200 free relay, their third straight title in the event. The team of Cassie Walth, Lydia Engberg, Jarren Fallgatter and McKenzie Jeske, clocked in at 1:41.43. Century’s 400 relay, winners the last two years, was second.

Walth had a simple explanation for Century’s relay success.

“I think we have really good freestylers,” she said.

If there’s any doubt about that, check out the results of the 100 free. Walth placed second, followed by Engberg in fourth, Fallgatter tied for sixth and Nicole Johnson ninth. As a result, Century racked up 53.5 points in that event alone.

But Century showed its strength across the board, with at least one Patriot finishing in the top seven of every event, including diving.

Walth was second in the 100 free and third in the 50. Smallbeck was second in the back and fourth in the fly.

“I didn’t get the times that I got last year, but the placings I moved up from last year, so that was really exciting,” Smallbeck said. “I think I did pretty good all in all.”
