MN 9-man state football quarterfinals: Cougars fall to Blue-Devils

The Ada-Borup Cougars pushed No. 2-ranked Goodridge-Grygla-Gatzke to the brink Friday at the Fargodome, but the Blue Devils had too much Dillon Olson.

The senior running back rushed for 301 yards and two touchdowns on 42 attempts. Olson’s performance helped lift his team to a 26-20 victory against No. 7 Ada-Borup in the Minnesota 9-man state football quarterfinals.

“He sure was the man,” said Goodridge-Grygla-Gatzke head coach John Wilebski. “He loves football and he just works so hard at it.”

Goodridge-Grygla-Gatzke (12-0) plays Lanesboro at 8 a.m. next Friday at the Metrodome in the state semifinals.

Ada-Borup (9-2) had its nine-game winning streak snapped, missing a chance to advance to the state semis for a third consecutive season. Both Ada-Borup losses were against Goodridge-Grygla-Gatzke, including a 44-22 setback to start this season.

“We really had a shot a winning this one tonight,” Cougars head coach Nathan Brager said.

Ada-Borup senior running back Aaron Olson scored on a five-yard touchdown run with 1 minute, 19 seconds to play in the third quarter. He also caught the ensuing two-point conversion pass from junior quarterback Jace Hennen to give the Cougars a 20-14 lead.

“I’ve got to give credit to Ada-Borup. They’ve been here before,” Wilebski said. “They were knocking on the door for a state championship. … This is new ground for us.”

The Blue Devils, however, rallied for two fourth-quarter touchdowns with sophomore backup quarterback Daniel Polansky at the helm. Polansky rushed for both touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

“He plays way older than his age,” Wilebski said. “The whole team just picked it up when Tyler went down. That is the sign of a good team.”

Polansky’s 9-yard TD run with 4:53 to play in the fourth quarter broke a 20-20 tie and gave the Blue Devils to a 26-20 lead.

Polansky came in for senior quarterback Tyler Schulz early in the second half. Schulz left the game with an elbow injury. Wilebski said Schulz’s elbow is likely either broken or dislocated.

Polansky rushed for 127 yards on 13 attempts, all of which came in the second half.

Goodridge-Grygla-Gatzke rushed for 532 yards on 74 attempts and weathered a five-turnover second quarter. The Blue Devils finished with six turnovers.

Aaron Olson rushed for 99 yards and two touchdowns on 24 attempts to lead Ada-Borup.
