Minnesota volleyball tournaments: Spuds’ season ends; Cougars fall in 1A

ST. PAUL – The high school volleyball season came to an end for Moorhead on Friday with a 3-0 loss to Andover in the Class 3A consolation round.

The Spuds, whose season ends with an 18-13 record, lost 25-18, 25-21, 25-17.

“Andover came out with a full head of steam and we did not pass well,” said Moorhead coach Char Lien. “When we have to force ourselves to play just defense, that’s not good for us.”

The Spuds did receive some good news Friday when they learned senior libero Cory Gilbertson was named to the honorable-mention all-state team.

MOORHEAD (kills-blocks-aces): C. Olsen 7-0-2, Tietz 6-2-0, Gilbertson 0-0-1 (25 digs), Falk 3-0-1, Baldwin 1-2-0 (23 assists), Johnson 1-0-0, L. Olsen 6-0-1.

ANDOVER: Rupkalvis 3-2-1, Hauer 11-7-0, Schultz 0-0-1, Turner 9-2-1, Terhar 5-1-0, Murdy 2-2-0, Cleveland 4-2-0, Trossen 0-0-0 (7 assists), McNallen 1-0-1 (24 assists).

Win-E-Mac prevails in 1A consolation

ST. PAUL – Kynndyl Ross had 15 kills and 11 digs to lead Win-E-Mac past Ada-Borup in the consolation semifinals of the Minnesota Class 1A state volleyball tournament 25-22, 25-14,

22-25, 25-14 on Friday.

Taylor Kujava led the Cougars with 12 kills and 16 digs.

A-B ends its season with a 25-8 record.

W-E-M (kills-blocks-aces): Handley 8-3-2 (32 assists), Hertwig 5-2-1, Ky. Ross 15-1-3, S. Kaster 9-4-3, O. Kaster 5-5-3, Ko. Ross 3-1-2, Olson 1-0-2 (14 digs).

A-B: Narum 6-0-1, Kujava 12-1-2 (16 digs), K. Kolness 6-3-1, M. Kolness 7-1-4 (14 assists), Steen 0-1-1, Herringer 0-1-0.
