Central Cass tops Kindred in Region 1 volleyball championship

LISBON, N.D. – The traditional power fended off the upstart for the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 volleyball tournament championship.

Central Cass rolled through Kindred 25-14,

25-18, 25-16 to reach the state tournament for the 12th time since 1990 on Thursday night at Lisbon gymnasium.

“I told them we knew the outcome, we were going to win by three and it was going to get done,” Squirrels coach Dana Stansbery said. “All we needed to do was sell everything we did and stay aggressive.”

Making just its second region title match appearance in school history and first since 1989, Kindred found itself in an early hole in each set.

And Central Cass never let up. It kept coming at Kindred with a barrage of well-placed tips and hard spikes until the climb appeared insurmountable.

Courtney Dixon, who finished with 12 kills, found success with both power and finesse.

Stansbery said a lot of film study gave the Squirrels a great idea of when to tip around the Vikings’ block.

And almost everything seemed to work.

“It started out right away,” Kindred coach Brooks Dockter said. “We missed a lot of serves in Set 1, and at the same token, everything we hit Central Cass dug up. We were drilling the ball sometimes and they dug the ball up, brought it back, kept it in play and did a lot of nice things.”

Central Cass seemed in control the entire match, breaking away late in each set en route to the win.

The Squirrels block limited Kindred standout sophomore Kellie Schmit to seven kills, and Braidy Dahl to six kills.

“We knew we would have to come out strong and we knew it would be a tough game either way,” Dixon said. “We knew it was now or never. Nothing was going to drop on our court was our mentality.”
