Moorhead’s Trollwood site renamed Bluestem

Earlier this week, Trollwood Performing Arts School announced its new executive director, Kathy Anderson.

Now the 2-year-old south Moorhead site has a new name.

Board members of FutureBuilders, the nonprofit fundraising force for the arts school, announced Thursday night that the facility has been renamed the Bluestem Center for the Arts.

“Bluestem will build upon the wonderful heritage of Trollwood, but the journey will now involve an arc of development that will encompass a broader spectrum of programming,” FutureBuilders President Steve Wurzer said in a news release.

The name of the school and program will remain Trollwood Performing Arts School.

In the announcement, FutureBuilders Associate Director of Development Katie Phillips said the site “will host concerts, corporate retreats, summer and winter festivals that involve the entire community, and much more.”

On Monday, the Moorhead City Council formally gave FutureBuilders the right to name structures and spaces at the site.

Bluestem, also called beard grass, is a prairie tall grass that can be found on the site, said Lisa Farnham, marketing coordinator for Trollwood.

“It is geographically relevant, and we believe it reflects the character of the site and what we offer,” Wurzer said in the announcement.

A mock-up during Thursday’s announcement at the Hotel Donaldson showed a faux schedule with a number of concerts and cultural happenings.

This summer, the stage housed Trollwood’s production of “Anything Goes,” a workshop and performance by Minneapolis’ In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre and Garrison Keillor’s “Prairie Home Companion Summer Love” tour. Keillor attracted 2,441 people, a record for the site.

Trollwood Performing Arts School will remain located at the site and continue as “a program of the Fargo Public Schools,” the posting stated.
