ND Region 1 volleyball: Central Cass slips past Wyndmere-Lidgerwood in five sets
However, none of the Squirrels seemed particularly flustered in the midst of all the chaos. In fact, head coach Dana Stansbery appeared to be cracking jokes on the bench as her team’s hopes of a state tourney berth hung by a thin thread.
Talk about calm under pressure.
Central Cass came back for a 25-21, 24-26, 18-25, 25-22, 15-13 victory against Wyndmere-Lidgerwood in the North Dakota Class B, Region 1 semifinals Wednesday at Lisbon gymnasium.
The Squirrels will face Kindred for the region title at about 7:45 p.m. today in Lisbon.
“Oh my gosh, it was insane,” said Squirrels senior outside hitter Jenna Kost. “It was up-and-down the whole time. There was no time when it was clear who was going to win. That’s what made it a really fun game to play.”
Central Cass, which last won the region crown in 2004, mounted several comebacks en route to the victory.
First, the Squirrels battled back from an early deficit to overtake the Warbirds in the first set.
Central Cass faced a similar situation in Set 2, but defending region champion Wyndmere-Lidgerwood held off the charge to knot the match at 1-1.
Outside hitter Moriah Skroch and Jenni Wettstein heated up in the third set to give the Warbirds momentum.
“We tried to keep a positive outlook on it,” Kost said. “At times we thought it’s now or never, we can’t let any more balls drop on our court. I think at that point it was all out.”
But the Squirrels kept plugging away.
Wyndmere-Lidgerwood jumped out to a 7-3 lead in the fifth set.
Central Cass scored four unanswered points to close out the match and advance to the title game.
“We left everything we had out on the court,” Kost said.
