Fargo District 45 state House race heads for automatic recount, auditor confirmsFARGO – The District 45 state House race between Ed Gruchalla and Andrew Marschall is headed for an automatic recount, the county auditor confirmed today.
When the county canvassing board met Monday, Gruchalla, a Democrat, gained one vote, making it a nine-vote difference between him and Marschall, said County Auditor Mike Montplaisir.
It falls within the range for an automatic recount, Montplaisir said.
The next step is for the state canvassing board to meet Nov. 16. After that, Cass County will arrange a date for a recount.
District 45 includes portions of Fargo north of 12th Avenue North and communities to the north, such as Harwood, Reiles Acres and North River. Fargo’s District 21 state House race between Democrat Steve Zaiser and Republican Rachel Disrud is not eligible for a recount, Montplaisir said.
The final vote tallies were 1,524 for Zaiser and 1,464 for Disrud, a difference of 60 votes.
After Election Day, the secretary of state’s website said the race fell within the range that would have allowed Disrud to request a recount.
However, Montplaisir said Tuesday the difference needed to be within 32 votes for Disrud to request a recount.
District 21 includes parts of north and central Fargo.
