Lind: They could have danced all night

Oh, how they danced on the night they were wed.

Those words from an old song could be those of Virginia Johnson and Dave Stetz.

After their wedding Oct. 24, 1970, at Assumption Catholic Church, Barnesville, Minn., the couple headed for the Galaxie Supper Club, Barnesville, for a wedding dance.

There, they and their guests cut loose on polkas, schottisches and waltzes to the music of Dave’s longtime buddy, Al Mikesh of Lidgerwood, N.D.

Forty years later, they did it again. Only this time, it was a surprise.

Graduation party?

Today, Dave and Virginia live in Barnesville, as do their son, Jason, and their daughter, Leah Thompson, plus their three grandchildren.

Dave managed the Galaxie at one time, and Leah once worked there.

Leah’s the sneaky one who cooked up something special for her mom and dad this fall.

Leah had just earned a degree from the University of Mary, Fargo. So invitations went out to family and friends, inviting them to a celebration last Sept. 5 at the Galaxie, ostensibly in honor of her graduation.

But at the bottom of the invitations was a note saying that this was also going to be a surprise party in honor of her folks’ 40th anniversary.

When the day came, people started coming into the Galaxie. And they kept coming. And coming. More than 350 of them.

The Stetzes were happy that so many people were there to honor their daughter. But then the news was broken. Dave and Virginia, this really is for you. Happy 40th.

And away everyone went, doing – what else? – the schottische, the polka, the old-fashioned waltz, all to the music of – who else? – Al Mikesh.

It was 1970, all over again.

Oh, sure, Dave and Virginia may have changed a tad. But they can still dance up a storm. And seeing them do so made their family happy to no end.

“They are,” daughter Leah says, “the best parents a kid could ask for.”

Now the Stetzes can look forward to the year 2020. That will mark their 50th anniversary.

Keep those dancing shoes shined up, Dave and Virginia.
