UC Davis hands Sioux football team another Great West lossGRAND FORKS – UC Davis coach Bob Biggs still remembers his first trip to the Alerus Center. It was in 2001 for the semifinals of the Division II playoffs.
In an electric – and to this date unmatched – atmosphere, the University of North Dakota won 14-2.
“The last time we were here, literally, you couldn’t hear yourself speak,” Biggs said.
It was much quieter during UC Davis’ return trip to Grand Forks. On Saturday, UC Davis rolled past UND 35-16 before 6,633 relatively quiet fans. UND finished its Great West Conference season 0-4 and dropped to 3-6 overall, which guarantees the Sioux their first losing season since 2002.
Not much went right for UND.
UC Davis, meanwhile, played perhaps its best game of the season as quarterback Randy Wright picked apart the Sioux defense, completing 19 of 28 passes for 286 yards and four touchdowns. Three of them went to Sean Creadick, who found himself wide open on all three of his scoring passes.
“It was one of those days that are tough to live through,” UND coach Chris Mussman said. “It was one of those days where you kick a field goal and it hits the upright and bounces out. We fumble a snap deep in our territory and they recover it in the end zone for a touchdown. We didn’t have a fake punt called but our (snapper) thought he heard something and snapped it to the up back.”
The result was fumble. But the botched punt attempt came in the fourth quarter. By then, UC Davis had the game well in hand.
Sioux linebacker Dan Hendrickson was more succinct.
“We got our butts kicked,” said UND’s leading tackler.
Somehow, however, UND managed to hang around until late in the third quarter.
Trailing 21-16, the Sioux had possession at their
5-yard line. But quarterback Marcus Hendrickson – who came off the bench earlier in the quarter to spark UND to a touchdown – fumbled, leading to a scramble for the ball.
UC Davis defensive lineman Brock Galvin pounced on the ball in the back of the end zone for a touchdown, giving the Aggies a 28-16 lead.
“That turned out to be a big play in the game,” Biggs said.
UC Davis had big plays on offense, too, in a game in which UND seemingly was always one step behind.
Wright hit Stephen Dunstan on a 39-yard scoring strike on the Aggies’ first possession. The Sioux offense managed to move the chains but couldn’t get into the end zone, settling for two Zeb Miller field goals in the second quarter, from 31 and 40 yards.
Wright hit Creadick for a 18-yard scoring strike late in the first half, sending UC Davis to a 14-6 hafltime lead.
The Sioux made a change at quarterback early in the third quarter, bringing in Marcus Hendrickson for starter Brent Goska.
“I thought Marcus did a good job for what we asked him to do,” Mussman said. “You saw his ability. He can move around.”
