MN 9-man football: Ada-Borup cruises to title

GRAND FORKS – Ada-Borup senior running backs Bill Atwood and Aaron Olson took all suspense out of the Minnesota 9-man, Section 6 championship game.

Ada-Borup dominated from beginning to end in a 37-7 victory over Nevis on Friday afternoon at the Alerus Center.

The Cougars, who improved to 9-1, won their third straight section title.

Atwood finished with 101 yards on 21 carries, while Olson had 130 yards on 18 carries. The duo also combined to score all five Cougar touchdowns.

“Our line was able to open some wide holes,” said Olson, who also had a

23-yard touchdown catch. “We knew coming into this game that we had to play with intensity. Our line really showed that.”

Ada-Borup will face Goodridge-Grygla in the first round of the state tournament next Friday at 2 p.m. in the Fargodome.

Undefeated Goodridge-Grygla is responsible for the Cougars’ only loss – a 42-22 setback in the regular season opener.

“We’re looking forward to the rematch,” Ada-Borup coach Nathan Brager said. “We think we’ve come a long way since we played them. We’re a different team now.”

The Cougars are also hoping to avenge a disappointing end to last season in which Ada-Borup allowed a 12-point fourth-quarter lead slip away in a state semifinal against Nicollet, who won 36-35.

The Cougars certainly looked motivated against Nevis. Ada-Borup recovered an onside kick to open the game and marched eight plays in less than three minutes, culminating in an Atwood 1-yard touchdown run.

The Cougars bumped the lead to 14-0 on their third possession of the game. Atwood, sprung by a block from Brandon Burke, took a swing pass 44 yards for a touchdown. Jace Hennen, who completed the touchdown pass to Atwood, also connected with Xavier Munoz on the 2-point conversion.

Hennen finished 4-for-9 passing for 106 yards.

Nevis briefly cut the lead in half late in the first quarter. Nevis’ Dylan Stenberg hauled in a 47-yard heave from Zach Anderson with 1:14 left in the opening quarter.
