Park board approves I-35W memorial siteMINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minneapolis park board has approved the site for a memorial to the Interstate 35w bridge collapse victims, survivors and first responders.
The site is across from Gold Medal Park, which became a gathering spot after the bridge collapse in 2007. The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board approved the site Wednesday night. The idea for the memorial was first announced in 2008, but slow fundraising and logistical issues held it up.
The Remembrance Garden will include names of victims etched into opaque glass on 13 backlit columns. Behind them will stand a wall recognizing survivors and those who responded to the collapse. An adjoining path will lead to a Mississippi River overlook providing views of the new bridge where traffic zooms by a few hundred feet away.
