ND lieutenant governor to choose his own successor Thursday

BISMARCK (AP) — North Dakota Lt. Gov. Jack Dalrymple says he'll announce his choice for his own successor as lieutenant governor on Thursday.

Gov. John Hoeven was elected to the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. Dalrymple is expected to take over the governorship early next month.

Dalrymple thus has the job of choosing his own replacement. The person will take over as lieutenant governor when Dalrymple becomes governor.

Dalrymple has been Hoeven's second-in-command during Hoeven's decade-long tenure as governor. Dalrymple is a Casselton farmer and former North Dakota state legislator.

A Hoeven spokesman says Hoeven is expected to resign as governor sometime during the Legislature's organizational session in early December. Dalrymple will deliver the governor's budget message to the Legislature during that session.
