Green's 14 kills lead Concordia to first-round victory in MIAC volleyball first round

Concordia not only wanted to win Tuesday at Memorial Auditorium, the Cobbers wanted to do so in convincing fashion.

Mission accomplished.

Behind 14 kills from Jenna Green, Concordia cruised to a 25-22, 25-17,

25-21 victory against St. Catherine in the first round of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament.

“We wanted to get it down in three,” Green said. “That was our goal and we accomplished that. … It was really important for us to get this done. We wanted to prove it almost to ourselves that we could get it done tonight.”

The No. 3 seed for the MIAC playoffs, the Cobbers (24-5) have won 12 of their last 13 matches. Concordia plays at No. 2 seed St. Thomas at 7 p.m. Thursday in the MIAC semifinals.

“We are building momentum,” Cobbers head coach Tim Mosser said. “To win this one is three straight, shows we’re peaking at the right time, and this is the time to do that.”

Wildcats (9-20) pushed the Cobbers in both the first and third sets. In the first set, St. Kate’s tied the score at 22-22 before Concordia countered with the final three points of the set. Green had two kills during that stretch, including match point.

St. Kate’s took a 17-15 lead in the third set after a Concordia hitting error. The Cobbers, however, answered by scoring 10 of the next 14 points to close out the third set and the match. Junior hitter Katie Vohnoutka had the kill for set point.

The Cobbers have likely done enough to earn an at-large bid for the NCAA Division III tournament, but Green and Mosser don’t want to fall back on that mindset. The MIAC tournament winner earns an automatic bid.

“We just want to keep that in the back of our mind like we might not make it so we keep pushing through the conference tournament,” Green said.
