Women's soccer: Wolfgram’s goal lifts NDSU to victory

North Dakota State’s Marissa Wolfgram left a lasting impression in her last regular season game at the Ellig Sports Complex.

Wolfgram scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 63rd minute as North Dakota State downed Oral Roberts

2-1 in Summit League women’s soccer Saturday.

“I knew I had to step up, being a senior,” Wolfgram said. “I wanted to leave my mark on the team.”

Wolfgram was awarded the penalty kick after Oral Roberts committed a foul in the box.

The win secured the second seed in the Summit League tournament for the Bison (11-5-4, 6-2-1 Summit).

The Bison finished in a three-way tie for second place with South Dakota State and Western Illinois. The Bison hold the head-to-head tiebreaker over both teams.

“I think when you’re season is on the line there’s a lot to play for,” Bison head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “We can hang with anyone, we can beat anybody in our conference and I think we’ve proven that this year.”

After a slow first half, Quin Ryan energized the Bison with a goal 33 seconds into the second half.

The three seniors on the team connected when Candice D’Arcangeli ran the ball into the right corner and passed back to Wolfgram, who one-timed the ball to the front of the net.

Ryan got a foot on the ball and tipped it past the Golden Eagles goalkeeper Amanda Wheeler to tie the game.

“We decided we were going to win this game,” Ryan said. “It had nothing to do how they played. No matter what, we were going to win.”

Wolfgram was credited with the lone assist on the goal, her first of the season.

“That’s the way you want to go out as a senior,” Cuadrado said.

With three minutes left in the game, D’Arcangeli nearly scored on a header, but Wheeler tipped the ball over the net by mere inches.

Oral Roberts (9-8-1, 4-4-1 Summit) scored the first goal of the game with 13 minutes left in the first half.

Tiffany Heward sent a long cross pass to Whitney Booth on the right side. Booth picked up the ball all alone and chipped the ball over Bison goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch for an easy goal.

The Bison outshot the Golden Eagles 8-4 in the first half.

Bertsch only made two saves in the game, but she prevented many shots on net by challenging the Golden Eagles forwards and taking away scoring opportunities.

The Bison will play the third seed in the semifinals of the Summit League tournament in Brookings, S.D. on Friday at 6 p.m.

“It doesn’t matter who we play, we’re ready to go out and win,” Ryan said.

FIRST HALF: 1, OR, Booth (Heward), 32:01.

SECOND HALF: 2, NDSU, Ryan (Wolfgram), 45:32. 3, NDSU, Wolfgram, 63:52 (pk).

SAVES: OR, Wheeler 6. NDSU, Bertsch 2.
