Giroux rushes for 249 yards as Alexandria knocks off Detroit Lakes in playoff footballDETROIT LAKES, Minn. – One could say the No. 3-seeded Alexandria football team was living on the edge in the Minnesota Class 4A, Section 8 semifinal tilt at No. 2 Detroit Lakes on Saturday evening.
The Cardinals’ shifty senior running back Parker Giroux made his living on the edge against the Lakers defense, compiling a total of 245 rushing yards to lead Alexandria to a convincing 34-13 victory.
The majority of Giroux’s 30 carries went around either left or right end, as he struck over and over for big chunks of yardage on the Lakers’ perimeter defense.
“The blockers got outside and we just kept hitting it,” Giroux said. “The offensive line was a big key, I have to give it to my line.”
Giroux’s 8.2 yards per carry was sparked by the game’s first score, which came on a 44-yard scamper down the left side of the field on the Cardinals’ first possession.
“We knew the way they played defense, they were going to pile it up middle, so we were going to work the edges” said Alexandria head coach Mike Empting. “Our wide receivers were also doing well down field blocking, as it showed on that 44-yard run by Parker, when one of the wide receiver’s blocks sprung him.”
The Cardinals rushing game also held the ball out of DL’s hands, as Alexandria had 27 offensive snaps to the Lakers’ six in the second quarter.
That enabled Alexandria to snag a 13-6 halftime lead, before the Lakers imploded with two back-to-back fumbles to start the third quarter, leading to 13 Alexandria points.
“We just had too many three-and-outs in the first half and never had the ball that much,” said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher.
