Berg stepped up for ND veteransI take issue with a recent letter to the editor (Oct. 16) by Jerome M. Bixby. I have great respect for anyone who serves this country as Bixby has, but I believe Bixby has some facts wrong.
I was among a few legislators on a sub-committee of appropriations that considered using leftover money from a fund that paid bonuses to Vietnam veterans (all Vietnam vets were paid, and there was money left over) for funding the Veterans Cemetery. After a call with the state’s military organizations, who objected, we scrapped the idea and instead appropriated money for the cemetery from other sources.
The point here is that Bixby is incorrect in his assertion that Rep. Rick Berg, R-Fargo, “spearheaded” the plan. Not only did Berg not spearhead it, he wasn’t even a part of the group that did.
Bixby is incorrect on two things: 1) those of us who were working to fund the cemetery were doing it for good reasons, and 2) not only was Berg not a part of our first plan to use money from the Veterans Trust Fund, he personally donated money to fund the cemetery when we scrapped the idea.
Berg supports our military and veterans, and he will be a strong advocate for them in the United States Congress.
