Inclement weather can't slow Detroit Lakes in football win against St. Cloud ApolloDETROIT LAKES, Minn. – The key stats in the Minnesota Class 4A, Section 8 quarterfinal playoff football game Tuesday were 30 mph winds, 35-degree temperatures and enough rain and sleet to anger even Old Man Winter.
The inclement weather conditions dictated each team’s game plan – which was run left, run right and run up the middle.
For the No. 2 Detroit Lakes Lakers, throw in a couple of early turnovers and it ended up being a well-earned 37-0 trouncing of the No. 7 St. Cloud Apollo Eagles.
“I’m not going to lie, it sucked playing in,” said junior quarterback Joe Mollberg, who led all rushers with 161 yards on 21 carries. “But we had each others’ backs out there and played hard all game for each other.”
With the wind at the Lakers’ backs, the Eagles dug the first foot of an eventual deep hole after they fumbled the ball on the first kickoff return.
From there, the Lakers controlled the pace and tempo by starting in Eagles’ territory in their first five possessions and scoring on four of them for a 29-0 halftime lead.
The game featured DL’s rushing attack, which put the focus on the offensive line.
It was a night made for an offensive line.
“It was nice getting that early lead, it was an emotional boost and it kept the game rolling for us,” said senior offensive lineman Levi Fairbanks. “The challenge was being able to get our footing, but we were able to overcome that. As the game went on, you could see (St. Cloud Apollo) were breaking off and wanting it to end soon.”
The Lakers outrushed the Eagles by a 260-134 margin, with both teams throwing the ball just once.
“In these conditions, you just try and run the ball,” said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher. “The guys did a good job getting the first downs. Tonight, the name of the game was field position.”
