Moorhead gets $2.5M for additional buyouts

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources has awarded Moorhead an additional $2.5 million worth of flood mitigation funds.

The money, which follows about $15 million already awarded by the DNR, will allow Moorhead to purchase four additional flood-prone properties, City Engineer Bob Zimmerman told City Council members Monday night.

Three of the properties are in the Riverview Circle/Rivershore Drive south area and one is in the 700 block of 10th Avenue North.

Zimmerman said funds will likely not be available this year to buy 23 flood-prone homes categorized as “Group E” properties. He said letters will be sent to those homeowners letting them know.

Also, Zimmerman said, work will begin soon in the area between Interstate 94 and 24th Avenue South, including the removal of trees and the moving of flood buyout homes.

Homes in that area are being moved or demolished to make room for a levee that the city has yet to secure funding to build.
