East Region Cross Country Championships: Power in words, Davies runners write on themselves to win

Fargo Davies girls cross country runners each scrawl some inspirational words with a black Sharpie on an arm.

Eagles junior Tarin Lachowitzer usually goes with “I be like a horse,” in reference to a humorous running quote she came across awhile ago.

However, for big meets, like Saturday’s East Region championships, she goes with, “Believe.”

The motivational tactic helped the defending Class A state champion to the first region title of her career in a time of 14 minutes, 43.90 seconds at Moorhead’s Johnson Park.

“I write ‘Believe’ because then I know mentally I have to push myself even more to know that I can do something great,” said Lachowitzer, who helped Davies to the girls team title in its first year of varsity competition.

Lachowitzer made believers out of everybody in the state last year with a standout sophomore season.

She was second to back-to-back champ Alissa Mears of West Fargo in the region before earning the state crown with a time of 14 minutes, 53.55 seconds.

This year, Lachowitzer started as the person to beat in the EDC. She’s been ranked in the top three in the Class A coaches poll for much of the season.

But, even as the defending champion, she may not be the favorite to finish first at state. Minot’s Brecca Wahlund has been the coaches pick as the top girls runner in the state all season.

Wahlund earned the Class A 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs at last year’s state track and field meet.

“I am very nervous because I don’t know the outcome with so many different competitors now,” Lachowitzer said of state, which is scheduled for Oct. 23 in Jamestown. “But I think if I really push myself and run a smart race, then I’ll be OK.”

Lachowitzer ran a smart – and familiar – race on Saturday.

As she has done time and again this year, Lachowitzer systematically picked off runners on her way to the front of the pack. She pulled away from second-place Sarah Jacobson of Fargo Shanley-Oak Grove in the final stretch and cruised to the win.

Jacobson, a seventh-grader, finished with a time of 15:00.09.

Davies had five runners in the top 11: Lachowitzer; Carly Bertsch (3); Katie Bye (5); McKenna Vetter (9); Kelsey Zastoupil (11).

“From the first day of practice, we’ve really worked toward the end of the season,” Davies girls coach Lisa Svaleson said. “Because this was our first year as a school, we really wanted to perform well as a team. I think they have really proven themselves throughout the season. And today was a great showing of their efforts.”

Grand Forks Central came out on top in a close boys team race, finishing with 67 points. Grand Forks Red River was second with 72 and Shanley/Oak Grove was third withy 74.

Red River senior Francis Mendee earned the individual title with a time of 16:20.55.

Mendee wowed the crowd by sprinting the final 100 yards. Grand Forks Central junior Paul Shafer was second with a time of 16:59.02.

Davies freshman Branden Scheel was third at 17:03.80.

“I was so nervous I thought I was not going to do good today,” said Mendee, who has won every race he’s competed in this season. “I thought I would choke. … But it went well.”
