High school volleyball: North easily takes Fargo Invitational title

Fargo North volleyball coach Melissa Wilson brings a simple philosophy to the game.

“The whole weekend our strategy was to play as a team and have fun,” Wilson said. “It’s something we’ve been focusing on.”

For the Spartans, having fun is easy when they’re winning.

Fargo North shut down Fargo Shanley 25-12, 25-17 to win the championship in the Gold Division of the Fargo Invitational on Saturday at Fargo South High School.

Senior libero Hope Marty sealed the win for the Spartans by acing the match point in Game 2.

Shanley rallied late in Game 2 facing a 23-14 deficit. The Deacons scored three straight points, before the Spartans scored two straight to win.

The win brings confidence to a Spartans team looking for a strong finish to the season before they enter the Eastern Dakota Conference tournament on Nov. 11.

“We’ve right in the mix with everything. We’ve beaten some of the top teams, just like the win here tonight against Shanley,” Wilson said. “That’s a big win. They’re a great volleyball team.”

Sophomore middle hitter Kira Larson led the Spartans in their three matches Saturday with a combined six blocks and four aces while recording 22 kills.

“We have a lot of really good hitters, it’s just really about connecting,” Larson said. “Some games we connect really well and others not so much, but tonight I think we really put it all together.”

The Spartans (22-9) front line overpowered the Deacons on offense and defense.

Junior outside hitter Keli Johnson led North with 24 kills in Saturday’s three matches.

"North played really well. They blocked well," Shanley head coach Wendy Zeiher said. “They’ve got a really big front line all the way around so they are tough to go around the block with.”
