Class A girls golf: Kraft leads pack after first round

JAMESTOWN, N.D. – On the 15th hole, after pulling her drive into the trees, Jamestown High School senior Laura Kraft pulled out a 5-iron and accidentally pulled off the shot of the day.

She snapped her shot straight into a steel windmill that stood off in the left rough and landed her ball safely on the green 30 feet from the hole.

Kraft missed the birdie putt, but tapped in for her most exciting par of the round.

“I guess sometimes luck is better than skill,” she said laughing.

Kraft’s good fortune helped her finish with an even-par 72 in Monday’s opening round of the state Class A girls’ golf tournament at Jamestown Country Club, putting the two-time defending state champion in great position to make history.

If Kraft, who holds a five-stroke lead going into today’s final round, can stay ahead of the field for 18 more holes, she will be the first-ever three-time girls’ golf state champion.

“She’s still got a job to do,” said JHS coach Dean Kraft, who is also Laura’s father. “In high school golf, it doesn’t take long to see a major swing in scores. The good thing is she will be playing with the girls that are chasing her.”

Fargo Shanley’s Sarah Storandt, who was paired with Kraft in Monday’s opening round, will be leading the chase from second place. Storandt overcame two double bogeys in Monday’s round to finish with a 5-over 77.

Behind Storandt is a three-way tie for third after Emma Kusick and Danielle Foster, both of Minot, and Bismarck Century’s Alexa Dvorak all shot 79.

Kusick and Foster’s performance led the way for the two-time defending team state champion Majettes, but Minot (340) is still looking up at Century (338), who carries a two stroke lead into today.

The reigning two-year East Region champion Fargo Shanley Deacons are on the outside looking in, sitting eight shots back after turning in a team score of 346.

“We didn’t play as well as we can play,” Shanley coach Don Johnson said. “Sarah had a pretty good day, but she can play better than that. Elizabeth (Strom) struggled a little bit, but I still think it’s her wrist bothering her a little bit.”

Strom, who finished with an 89 on Monday, injured her wrist hitting golf balls earlier in the year and still hasn’t fully recovered. Johnson said the injury was identified as a stress fracture.

“She’s not the type of girl that would complain about anything,” Johnson said. “I’m sure she’ll play better (today).”
