Local businessman, philanthropist Shelly Ellig dies

Local entrepreneur and philanthropist Shelly Ellig has died.

Ellig’s passing was confirmed Monday by a member of Fargo’s Olivet Lutheran Church, where he was a member.

As a businessman, Ellig is best known for his Stop-N-Go Foods Inc., parent company of the convenience stores.

As a philanthropist, Ellig gave large donations to North Dakota State University, Oak Grove Lutheran School and the Red River Zoo.

In December 2008, Ellig, 81 at the time, announced a $1.25 million gift to Oak Grove Lutheran School in Fargo.

At NDSU, a sports complex for track and field and soccer bears his name. He also gave a major donation for part of a Bison Sports Arena upgrade.
