UPDATED: Suspect being held in connection with Mahnomen County double homicideMAHMOMEN, Minn. – A suspect is in custody this morning in connection with a double homicide in which an unidentified man and woman, described as an elderly couple, were shot and killed in rural Mahnomen County.
Mahnomen County Sheriff Doug Krier told The Forum his office received a call about 2:30 this morning from the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office alerting authorities of a possible double homicide.
Morrison County officials later notified Mahnomen County that they had located a pickup stolen from Benton County, driven by a Mahnomen County resident.
Deputies from Mahnomen County and White Earth Reservation officers went to the residence of the pickup’s registered owner and found a man and woman dead, both apparent gunshot victims.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is on the scene, a rural residence eight miles east of Mahnomen on County Road 3, with a mobile crime lab.
The names of the victims are being withheld pending notification of relatives.
The unidentified suspect, who was driving the stolen pickup, is being held in the Benton County Jail in Foley as the investigation continues. No other suspects are being sought.
No motive for the killings is known, Krier said, adding that there is no known connection between the victims and the suspect in custody. Officials hope to
interview the suspect. “Hopefully we’ll know more,” the sheriff said.
