Bail set at $500,000 in attempted murder caseWAHPETON, N.D. – Bail was set at $500,000 Tuesday for a Wahpeton man charged with attempted murder after a head-on crash Sept. 12.
According to the charging document and the North Dakota Highway Patrol, Charles Mikkelson, 70, was driving his 2008 Chevy Silverado pickup on Highway 127 south of Wahpeton when he crossed the center line, hitting a 2009 Ford Escape SUV.
The Escape was driven by 62-year-old Kathleen Lureen, also of Wahpeton. She and Mikkelson had a relationship prior to the incident, the patrol said.
Judge Richard Grosz set bail at $500,000 cash or surety in Richland County District Court.
Prosecutors wanted bail to remain at its originally set amount of $2 million, Assistant State’s Attorney Ron McBeth said, while the defense sought $50,000 bail.
A preliminary hearing is set for Nov. 4.
