Judge: No new trial for former North Dakota workers’ compensation exec Sandy Blunt

BISMARCK (AP) – A judge says a prosecutor didn’t withhold evidence in the trial of former North Dakota workers’ compensation director Sandy Blunt.

South Central District Judge Bruce Romanick refused Blunt’s requests to throw out his felony conviction or grant him a new trial.

Blunt was convicted in December 2008 of a felony charge of misspending public funds. His lawyer claims Burleigh County prosecutor Cynthia Feland held back a state auditor’s memo that would have helped Blunt’s defense.

Romanick ruled Wednesday that Blunt’s lawyer already had the information in the memo. The judge says Feland didn’t violate any rules on turning over material to the defense.

Feland herself had asked Romanick to decide whether she broke any rules.
