High school football: Packers ground Eagles

Matt Ruff wanted to see his team do a better job ending drives with touchdowns, a desire that was fulfilled Friday at the Fargodome.

The West Fargo senior quarterback threw three touchdowns in the first quarter to spark the Packers to a 42-7 victory against Fargo Davies in Eastern Dakota Conference football.

“We’ve been moving the ball pretty good, but we haven’t been putting it in the end zone,” Ruff said. “We wanted to come out and see if we could get it in the end zone and we did that.”

The Packers (2-1, 1-0 EDC) built a three-touchdown lead less than 10 minutes into the game with the help of Ruff’s arm. His

12-yard touchdown pass to Drew Lemke with 2 minutes, 44 seconds to play in the first quarter staked West Fargo to a 21-0 lead.

Ruff completed 6 of 9 passes for 102 yards and the three touchdowns. Eight of those pass attempts and 94 yards came in the first quarter.

“Matt throws a pretty good ball,” Packers coach Jay Gibson said. “He’s learned all the reads and the progressions. I’m pretty impressed with how he has done so far.”

Davies (0-4, 0-1) remained winless in its first varsity season. The Eagles committed seven turnovers.

“I thought the defense played tremendous. We definitely made some strides on that side of the ball,” said Davies coach Jason Thielges. “You are never going to win a game with seven turnovers. We’ve got to clean some things up.”

Davies is playing a varsity schedule even though it has no seniors on its roster this season.

“Davies is in a tough situation because they don’t have any seniors. … they’re going to be fine,” Gibson said. “They have some really nice athletes. We’ve got 21 seniors starting out of 22 (positions) so we have the experience. The experience alone is a really big edge.

“Their coaches are doing a wonderful job. They are very organized. They just need another year of experience and they are going to be a real nice club.”

Thielges thinks his team has shown improvement, even if that hasn’t translated into wins.

“We’re definitely going in the right direction,” Thielges said. “I thought compared to the Bismarck game we played last week it was a night-and-day difference.”
