Fargo City Commission wants path in Deer Creek addition

The Fargo City Commission wants Deer Creek developers to include a bike path that was scrapped before it approves rezoning of the south Fargo addition.

The Planning Commission recommended Tuesday the recreational trail along the Sheyenne River as a condition of the addition’s approval, but study of the riverbank showed it was too unstable to remove trees to make room for the path, said city planner Jim Hinderaker.

And making room for the path would force developers to move already planned lots, Hinderaker said.

City commissioners asked the developers to work the path into plans because the trail is part of the city’s growth plan.

The commission will again discuss the rezoning at its Sept. 20 meeting.

In other business:

  • The commission voted 5-0 to approve Mayor Dennis Walaker’s preliminary 2010 budget.

The budget tops $206 million and does not include a mill levy increase. The commission will hold public comment on the budget at its Sept. 20 meeting.

  • A new downtown development located at 21 8th St. N. also received commission approval Tuesday.

The $4 million 48-apartment building by developer Jay Alsop of APM is expected to get under way this fall.
