High school football: Squirrels control, No. 5-ranked Central Cass shuts out Oak Grove
The No. 5-ranked Squirrels controlled every aspect of the game Friday, using a 25-point outburst in the second quarter to defeat North Dakota Class 2A East Region rival Fargo Oak Grove 45-0 at Jake Christiansen Stadium.
“We’ve been able to control the line of scrimmage, and that’s the biggest thing,” Metzger said. “We have some experience up front. We have playmakers this year and we’ve been playing as a team.”
Central Cass (2-0) dominated on both sides of the ball as it cruised to a 31-0 halftime lead.
The Squirrels, who defeated Northern Cass 34-12 in last week’s season opener, first got the ground game going with running backs Drew Nicklay and Ben Birrenkott and Jordan Hersch.
The trio combined for 103 yards on first-half 16 carries. Quarterback Mitch Scheer added 26 yards on the ground.
But it was the Squirrels’ special teams that opened the scoring.
Jalen Ham weaved his way through the Grovers for a 48-yard punt return for a touchdown to give Central Cass a 6-0 lead.
Nicklay made it 12-0 on a 20-yard run with 9 minutes, 24 seconds remaining in the first half.
Just two minutes later, the Squirrels passing game was sparked by a 54-yard touchdown strike by Scheer to Ham.
Scheer finished the first half 4 of 4 for 78 yards and two touchdowns.
“We’ve got a whole laundry list of things,” said Grovers coach Tony Stauss, whose team has allowed 83 points and has yet to get into the end zone in its first two games. “… There were a couple things there. We put out a 4-4 defense, and I thought we looked all right early in that. Casselton just had a couple of big plays. That’s a darn good team. Everybody in Class 2A is just very good.”
Oak Grove (0-2) had little go its way from the start.
The Grovers were limited to one yard of total offense in the first half and finished with minus-8.
Central Cass limited Oak Grove to 28 total plays.
“Last week, we were really disappointed with the way we came out in the second half,” Metzger said. “We didn’t do what we wanted to do. We gave up a kick return and we said that in this game we’re putting the pedal to the metal for four quarters.”
