United Way of Cass-Clay sets $5M targetThe United Way of Cass-Clay will announce its 2010 campaign goal of $5 million today. This is the largest goal to date for the organization, said Melinda Haun, president.
A campaign kick-off event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Newman Outdoor Field.
Haun said the $5 million mark was set based on the funding needs of nonprofits supported by the United Way.
“We also felt a 2.5 percent increase over last year was realistic,” she said, adding that in visiting with workplaces and top supporters, there was a fairly optimistic sense about the community’s potential to raise $5 million.
The United Way of Cass-Clay’s 2009 goal was $4.875 million.
This 2.5 percent increase is smaller than the organization’s recent goal bumps.
Since 2005, when the United Way’s target was just shy of $3.8 million, the goal has increased by about 32 percent.
Haun said the organization would have fallen short of its 2009 goal by $200,000, but four local businesses made additional $50,000 gifts late in the campaign to bring the total raised to $4,876,983.
She said the organization plans to raise that $200,000 this year in addition to the $5 million goal.
