Erskine, Minn., church opts out of ELCA, could join new Lutheran denominationMembers of Grace Lutheran Church in Erskine,Minn., voted to leave the Northwestern Minnesota Synod (NWMS) of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America following the ELCA's controversial decisions on sexuality just over a year ago.
NWMS Bishop Larry Wohlrabe informed the synod of the church's decision in the Aug. 27 edition of the NWMS newsletter, "Northern Lights," calling it "sad news."
The note from Wohlrabe says that the congregation is taking steps to join the North American Lutheran Church (NALC). That denomination officially formed Friday and Grace Lutheran Church is listed as a member congregation on the NALC website.
Grace has 357 members, according to 2009 numbers listed on the ELCA website.
