High school football: 2-point Tornado, Zetocha’s 4th-quarter conversion gives Oakes win

KINDRED, N.D. – What the Oakes offense saw at the line of scrimmage forced a timeout.

What happened on the next play resulted in something Kindred wish they hadn’t witnessed.

Oakes (1-0) rallied from a 13-6 deficit and completed a fourth-quarter comeback capped by Tanner Zetocha catching the 2-point conversion for a 14-13 win Tuesday night at Kindred.

The loss denied Kindred (0-1) its first win in two years.

“We called a timeout because of the defense they threw at us,” said Zetocha, who had five receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown.

“Then we came back with something different. Their defense came with a blitz and Trent (Ptacek) threw it my way.”

Ptacek’s was rushed by five people as he threw the ball to Zetocha, who was left open with no one within a 5-yard radius.

The pass floated to Zetocha, who fell to the ground seconds after getting the ball through the crisp, mosquito-infested night air.

It was the Ptacek and Zetocha combination that brought Oakes back.

With 2 minutes, 14 seconds left in the fourth, Ptacek found Zetocha on an out route on third-and-4.

Zetocha caught the ball, and after eluding a few tackles he scored a 59-yard touchdown.

“He’s our big-play guy,” said Oakes coach Shawn Sagert. “He played real well for us.”

Sagert’s words might be a bit of an understatement.

Zetocha, who ran 12 times for 31 yards, scored Oakes’ first touchdown on a five-yard run to open the third quarter.

When he wasn’t on offense, he was definitely a threat on defense.

Zetocha also had two interceptions.

Kindred had two minutes left to mount a comeback.

Things looked good until Kindred junior quarterback Brandon Mitchell was blindsided with a sack by Alex Breitbach.

Breitbach’s hit jarred the football loose as Adam Roney recovered the football.

“I’m real proud of the effort our kids gave, but there are some things we need to work on,” said Kindred first-year coach Cody Kittleson. “But the kid over there, you have to give him credit for the way he played too.”
