Turnberg takes part-time job with KFGO

Fans of popular Fargo-Moorhead television personality Michelle Turnberg may not see her smiling face on TV anymore, but at least they can now hear her voice.

KFGO Radio hired the former “Valley News Live” television anchor for its “Live @ 5” radio program, which airs at 5 p.m. Monday through Friday on AM 790. She will make her debut on the program today.

Turnberg will take over Sandy Buttweiler’s role on “Live @ 5,” which is an hourlong program featuring news, weather, sports and traffic information. Buttweiler will continue in her role with the “Jack and Sandy” midday show.

“I’ve always had a really good relationship with (Operations Manager) Joel Heitkamp and everybody over at KFGO, so I’m looking forward to it,” Turnberg said Tuesday.

“Oh, we’re excited,” Heitkamp said about Turnberg. “What we’ve got to find out from each other is whether or not this is a good fit.”

Turnberg’s role with the station is on a part-time basis. As to whether she could transition into a full-timer, Heitkamp said, “Oh, I think it’s way too early to say that, one way or another. I think time is going to tell that.”

Turnberg parted ways with KVLY-KXJB’s “Valley News Live” news team in June in a move initiated by station management. Management did not disclose a reason for the decision.

Last year, Forum readers voted Michelle Turnberg, a Dawson, Minn., native, the area’s best TV anchor.

Turnberg said the “hard news” of the job drew her to the KFGO opportunity.

“I don’t know that I could do something that didn’t require keeping up on all the day’s happenings and what’s going on in the world and current events … and that kind of thing,” she said. “I want to do something that’s got substance to it.”

Turnberg said she doesn’t know what the change to radio will be like, but the switch ensures at least one change.

“I won’t have to do full makeup and wardrobe every day,” she said.

KFGO also recently hired former “Valley News Live” meteorologist Shawna Olson. She is working as an agriculture field correspondent.

Efforts to reach Olson for comment were unsuccessful.
