2 tubers drown on Red Lake River

Two men tubing on the Red Lake River disappeared Sunday, prompting authorities to launch a boat search that ended hours later when their bodies were found in about 9 feet of water, said Sheriff Mitch Bernstein of Red Lake County, Minn.

The two men, a 28-year-old from East Grand Forks, Minn., and a 24-year-old from Grand Forks, were pronounced dead at the scene. No one saw them go under, but it’s assumed they drowned, and no foul play is suspected, Bernstein said.

The victims’ names were withheld, pending notification of their families. The sheriff’s department plans to release their names Tuesday.

Bernstein said the two men were tubing with three other people near Red Lake Falls, Minn. The two became separated from their tubes not far from the County Road 13 bridge, while trying to collect some garbage that had fallen in the water, the sheriff said.
