Soldier with ND ties reportedly killed in Texas crash

BISMARCK — An Army soldier with ties to North Dakota has died in a motorcycle crash in Texas.

The North Dakota National Guard said Monday that 21-year-old Spc. Eric Spurgeon died Thursday from injuries suffered in the crash. He was a member of Company E, 1st Battalion, 43rd Air Defense Artillery, 11th ADA Brigade at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Spurgeon grew up in North Dakota and graduated from Maple Valley High School in 2007. His parents Lori and James Cookman live in Buffalo. His other parent, Duke Spurgeon, lives in Miami, Okla.

Spurgeon's family says he had a good sense of humor and great respect for his elders. During basic training, he traded letters with members of his church in Buffalo.

The Guard says Spurgeon returned from a deployment to Qatar in March.
