Cass County to raze three buyout homes
Demolition bids for the three homes will be opened early next month, County Engineer Keith Berndt said Wednesday.
“Then I expect we’ll proceed soon thereafter,” he added.
The action, approved this week by county commissioners, came after Briarwood officials refused to grant an exception to an ordinance prohibiting trees to be removed to facilitate house moves.
Residents complained that moving the large homes would cause significant damage to property. In order to defray costs, the county auctioned off many homes purchased in a buyout program to remove property from flood-prone areas.
Commissioners grudgingly approved the demolition of the three houses, concluding there was no alternative than refunding the money to the purchasers and dismantling the homes.
“The county’s left holding the bag by the city,” Commissioner Ken Pawluk said.
