Bison men's basketball: Superior hoops star commits to Bison

The two-hour high school practice plus a half-hour workout in the weight room was over and Superior High School boys basketball coach Dave Kontny called the cell phone of guard Joel Lindberg.

Lindberg was at the University of Wisconsin-Superior gym shooting baskets. That happened a few times, Kontny said.

“I love competing,” Lindberg said. “I just fell in love with basketball. I love everything about it.”

North Dakota State loves everything about Lindberg and the 6-foot-2 Wisconsin prep star verbally committed to the Bison over the weekend and will be a part of the 2011-12 freshman class.

Lindberg averaged 21.8 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals for Superior last year as a junior. He also had offers from South Dakota State, Wofford, Toledo, South Dakota, North Dakota, Eastern Kentucky, San Diego and Santa Clara.

“I had different options,” Lindberg said, “but the staff at NDSU was by far the most comfortable I felt with. I can’t wait. I want to try and get in there and help anyway I can.”

Lindberg is the second verbal for the 2011-12 class and most likely the last. He joins another Wisconsin player – 6-8 forward Chris Kading of DePere.

Lindberg will be entering his fourth year as a starter. Superior has won five straight conference titles, three with Lindberg running the show.

“NDSU is getting a great kid,” Kontny said. “He’s a great role model, he’s involved in the community, goes to church youth programs and he has a deep passion for the game. You’re not going to see a better kid.”
