Reckless driving charge filed in crash killing two

A 32-year-old Englevale, N.D., man is charged with reckless driving in a crash that killed a husband and a wife in rural Cass County in April.

Neil David Walton was arraigned Wednesday on the misdemeanor charge in Cass County District Court after prosecutors filed the charge on July 28.

Court records say that Walton told North Dakota troopers after the April 18 accident at Highway 18 and Highway 81 that he was talking with his friend in the passenger seat as they traveled west on Highway 18 and did not see a stop sign at the intersection.

Deb and Rob Baumbach were heading north and hit the back of Walton’s truck. They were thrown from the motorcycle they were on and pronounced dead at the scene, court records show.

Troopers said in a report filed with the charge they do not suspect Walton was under the influence at the time of the crash. He told investigators he had been sober for nearly a year.

Walton’s next court date was set for Nov. 2.
