Proposed ordinance bans smoking in Bismarck barsBISMARCK (AP) — A proposed ordinance in Bismarck would ban smoking in bars.
The City Commission has scheduled an Aug. 24 public hearing on the matter.
City Attorney Charlie Whitman says bars, truck stops and smoke shops are exempt from the current smoking ban but would lose that status under the change.
Anti-tobacco groups are backing the proposed change.
Bar owner Derek Thomas fears a ban would hurt business. He says people don't want to stand outside to smoke when it's 30 degrees below zero, and he thinks some will go to bars in neighboring Mandan instead.
