Walk of Hope slated next monthThe American Association of Suicidology has released its 2007 statistics, which show an increased rate of suicide across the nation. AAS reports that North Dakota has the 11th- highest rate of suicide in the nation, and the seventh-highest youth suicide rate. These tragic statistics remind us that suicide can happen in any community, including our own.
On Sept. 12, FirstLink will host its 10th Annual Walk of Hope for suicide awareness and remembrance. Walkers will gather at the downtown Fargo Public Library courtyard (near the Civic Center). Registration begins at 3 p.m., and the walk begins at 3:30 p.m. After the walk, there will be a short program including a speaker, special music and open microphone time for those who wish to share their story.
For additional information on the Walk of Hope or the Suicide Survivors Support Group, call the FirstLink administrative office at (701) 293-6462.
If you or someone you know is in suicidal crisis or emotional distress, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (free, 24 hours a day) at (800) 273-8255 (273-TALK).
