Two 14-year-old girls rescued from Minnesota lakeFAIRMONT, Minn. (AP) — Two 14-year-old girls, struggling in the water after their canoe capsized on a southern Minnesota lake, were rescued by a police officer and a police department secretary.
Authorities say the girls were boating without lifejackets on Lake Sisseton in Fairmont when their canoe flipped Thursday afternoon.
A man spotted the girls struggling and called 911. The girls were about 50 to 75 yards from shore and just below the Law Enforcement Center. When the call came in, secretary Tegan Quade raced down a wooden flight of stairs to help. She and Officer Jaime Bleess jumped in the water and pulled the girls to safety.
Bleess says he later called his mother to thank her for making him take swimming lessons.
