Emmer, Dems skirmish over biofuels at Farmfest

REDWOOD FALLS, Minn. (AP) — A farm-focused debate in the governor's race shows some sharp differences between Republican Tom Emmer and the three Democrats vying to challenge him in the fall.

At the annual Farmfest in Redwood Falls, House Speaker Margaret Anderson Kelliher challenged Emmer for voting against mandates to promote and support ethanol and biodiesel fuels — popular in farm country.

Emmer first said he actually voted for those mandates, then corrected himself to say that he had voted yes on some measures and no on others. Afterward, Emmer said he opposes mandates in general but supports creating opportunities for new markets for ethanol and biofuels.

Kelliher and her Democratic rivals, Mark Dayton and Matt Entenza, all support the mandates and subsidies.
