Jailer charged with sexual abuse of a ward
BISMARCK, N.D. — A former Bureau of Indian Affairs jailer has pleaded guilty to having a sex with an inmate.
Officials say 37-year-old Judson P. Elk of Belcourt pleaded guilty on Monday to a charge of sexual abuse of a ward. Sentencing is slated for Oct. 18.
Elk faces up to 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Acting U.S. Attorney Lynn Jordheim says Elk was employed as a corrections officer in August 2009 at the BIA detention center in Belcourt.
Jordheim says Elk had sex with an inmate at the detention center. He says the crime was discovered when the inmate's cellmate came forward with information.
