USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior National Championships: Two seeking Triple Crown status in Fargo

Zane Richards is a step away from entering exclusive territory.

The 15-year-old from Illinois earned the USA Wrestling Cadet Greco-Roman 130-pound national title on Monday at the Fargodome to secure two-thirds of this year’s Cadet Triple Crown.

“I hadn’t really though about it,” said Richards, who started the Triple Crown watch with the Cadet folkstyle national title in April in Iowa. “That would be huge if I could win all three styles. But I’m more just focused on winning the freestyle national title, not just the Triple Crown.”

Richards, also a Cadet national Greco-Roman champion a year ago in Fargo, will be one of two wrestlers competing for the Triple Crown when the freestyle tournament begins Wednesday at the Fargodome. The freestyle finals are scheduled for Friday.

Indiana’s Mitch Sliga earned the 189 folkstyle title in April and the Greco-Roman crown on Monday.

Darshawn Sharp of Georgia at 98 and Austin Hood of Kansas at 105 each had their Triple Crown hopes dashed with loses in Monday in the Greco-Roman finals.

One of the three Triple Crown winners last year was Anoka, Minn.’s Jake Waste. Each of last year’s winners were ineligible to compete at the Cadet level this year due to their age.

“Some people say it’s almost impossible,” Richards said. “But it’s been done before. My goal is just to be a better wrestler. If you are a better wrestler, you can be better at all three styles and you can be a Triple Crown winner.”

A large and boisterous crowd from Illinois was on hand to cheer on Richards and the other Team Illinois wresters in the finals.

Jordan Lind (84) and Ben Whitford (125) also won national titles for Team Illinois. Justin Valencia finished second at 160.

Tom Walton, who will be a sophomore at Fargo North this year, finished sixth at 91 pounds in the Cadet Greco-Roman tournament to earn All-American honors.

Walton was sixth at 103 as a freshman at last year’s North Dakota state wrestling tournament.

“It helps to see other guys and what they are doing across the country,” Walton said. “It helps to improve you for future reference when you see these guys again.”

Walton’s father, Steve, was a standout wrestler at Moorhead High School and a former wrestler at Minnesota State Moorhead and North Dakota State.

“This tournament is the showcase for any high school kid or junior high kid coming up,” Steve said. “This is the grand tournament. This is the one you want to be placing at. … I think it’s a springboard for him for the high school season.”
