Dorgan to vote in favor of confirming Kagan

North Dakota Democratic Sen. Byron Dorgan said Wednesday he plans to vote in favor of confirming Elena Kagan as the next Supreme Court justice.

“Kagan is an excellent nominee who has broad academic, legal and governmental qualifications, and I intend to vote for her nomination to the Supreme Court,” Dorgan said in a statement. “After considering Solicitor General Kagan’s answers before the Senate Judiciary Committee and meeting with her one-on-one, I am confident that she will be an excellent Supreme Court justice.”

Dorgan expects Kagan to pass the Senate “with substantial support.”

Kagan first needs approval by the Senate Judiciary Committee – a vote set for Tuesday – before her nomination can be considered by the entire Senate.

Minnesota Democratic Sens. Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar, both members of that committee, have stated previously that they intend to vote in favor of Kagan’s nomination.
