Thai Orchid owners plan move to Moorhead Center Mall, East Grand Forks restaurant

Moorhead’s Thai Orchid is replanting itself.

The ethnic food restaurant is moving into the Moorhead Center Mall.

Co-owner David Scheer said he hopes to open in the mall on July 15.

“We’ll close one day, open the next. That’s what we’re hoping for,” Scheer said.

Thai Orchid opened in a former Hardee’s building at 900 1st Ave. N. in 2005. Scheer said the lease was up on the current location, which has been difficult to access lately due to road construction on First Avenue North.

He purchased the restaurant site within the mall, which he said will help control costs. The location was most recently a Country Kitchen. It formerly housed TnT’s Café and a Highway Host.

The new Thai Orchid will be more open, with a more modern kitchen and slightly more seating, Scheer said. The hours and menu will be the same.

“We’re going to try to keep the same ambiance so they know it’s the Thai Orchid,” Scheer said.

“I think we can do the Moorhead Center Mall some good, too,” he added.

Moorhead Center Mall Manager Kristi Ulrich is excited to have the restaurant join the mall.

“I know they have such a strong following they will bring a whole group of new people to the mall that maybe have not had an opportunity to experience the mall,” Ulrich said.

In addition to Thai Orchid, Scheer and his son-in-law, Thamrong “Keng” Dechawuth, own Leela Thai, Wasabi Sushi and two Drunken Noodle restaurants in Fargo.

They recently remodeled the space next to Wasabi and Drunken Noodle for a flower shop. Prairie Petals will open on July 12.

They are also opening a new restaurant in East Grand Forks, Minn. Little Bangkok, at 302 Demers Ave., will be a mix of the Thai Orchid and Wasabi, Scheer said. It will likely open in August.

“We hope Grand Forks likes us a little bit,” Scheer said.
