Enhanced speed patrols slated in Becker CountyDETROIT LAKES, Minn. – Becker County motorists will face enhanced speed enforcement patrols throughout July.
The Becker County Sheriff’s Department and Detroit Lakes, Frazee and Lake Park police departments will increase their speed patrol efforts as part of a statewide campaign administered by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety.
According to the office, speed was a contributing factor in seven fatalities in Becker County and 325 traffic deaths statewide from 2007 to 2009.
In Becker County, a typical ticket for driving 10 miles over the speed limit can cost $125. Motorists stopped at 20 miles per hour over the speed limit face double the fine, and those ticketed traveling more than 100 miles per hour can lose their license for six months.
Officials say speed is the most commonly reported contributing factor in fatal crashes.
