ND native to be awarded military honor July 19

WASHINGTON – Sen. Byron Dorgan announced Tuesday that Ret. Col. Claude Schonberger, formerly of Casselton, N.D., will be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross at a ceremony July 19 at the Pentagon.

Schonberger was originally nominated for this honor 65 years ago.

When it was brought to Dorgan’s attention in November that he never received the award, he wrote a letter to the secretary of the Air Force asking for Schonberger to be re-nominated.

Schonberger will be recognized for a mission he flew over Germany on Feb. 16, 1945, during which his bomb-loaded aircraft took heavy damage, yet he managed to complete a final bomb run with accuracy.

Schonberger, now 88, lives in Alexandria, Va.
