Woman gets 6 months for hit-and-run last fallA woman who pleaded guilty this week to a felony tied to a Sept. 15 hit-and-run in Fargo was sentenced to six months in jail, one quarter of the time prosecutors had recommended.
Jennifer Grieger pleaded guilty Monday in Cass County District Court to a felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident involving serious injury.
Mark Boening, an assistant Cass County state’s attorney, said he asked for a two-year imprisonment, given the serious nature of the injuries caused.
Defense attorney Nicholas Thornton had recommended a three-month jail sentence, arguing that a short stint behind bars was similar to the punishments for similar recent crimes in Cass County, Boening said.
Grieger struck a friend of hers with a vehicle shortly after they had been in an argument. Melody Leavell, the victim, died in January of a drug overdose. Her mother said she was taking medication to relieve pain from the accident.
Grieger, 52, of Fargo, will be on supervised probation for one and a half years following her release, and she is barred from driving, Boening said.
