Midwest makeover: Mikkelson emerges as contender in Midwest Mods class at RRVS
Unless you drive in the Midwest Modifieds. Ryan Mikkelson has laid claim to that class.
Mikkelson has won both features of the season in the Midwest Modifieds – dominating last week and catching a break on Wednesday.
“I had never won a feature here before this year,” Mikkelson said. “And I raced here two straight years (in 2007-08). I never won once that whole time, so this is a lot better.”
Mikkelson was rookie of the year in the Midwest Modifieds at RRVS in 2007.
Fargo’s Cale Arneson got caught up behind lap traffic with six laps to go, and Mikkelson took advantage. The Jamestown, N.D., driver passed Arneson and the lap car on Turn 2 and never looked back on the way to the win.
“I thought I might have had enough to get Cale, but it would’ve been a dog fight,” Mikkelson said. “He’s a strong driver.”
Mikkelson is driving a new car from last season, and he seems to have dialed into the new ride pretty quickly.
“I told my old man after I got this car, when I got it figured out, that it had brought the fun back,” Mikkelson said.
In the Super Stocks, Enderlin, N.D., driver Kevin Robertson dominated the field on the way to the feature victory.
In the Street Stocks, Randy Kollman of Carrington, N.D., picked up his first career feature victory in the class. He led every single lap of the feature, and held off Fargo’s Rick Schulz for the final two laps after a restart.
Jason Strand also pulled off a first, picking up his first Modified feature win. The Portland, N.D., racer had to hold off Blake Jegtvig for the final three laps after a restart.
In the Late Models, Jeremy Keller from Bismarck took the checkered flag, leading the final 16 laps of the feature while running away from the field.
