Portraits: Zach Kosienski
Zach Kosienski, a senior from Fargo North High School, is part of the automotive team from Fargo South who competed in the Ford AAA Student Auto Skills Competition on Thursday at the Red River Valley Fairgrounds in West Fargo. He, along with teammate Robi Sorum, were the first of eight teams from around the state to find and fix 10 bugs on a Mercury Milan in an effort to represent North Dakota at the National Finals June 13-15 in Dearborn, Mich. Though Zach’s team didn’t win the competition, he has still put his technical skills to use. He has a 1988 Mustang that he has been working on. So far, he has painted it, rebuilt the motor, rebuilt the transmission, and is currently tackling an electrical problem while it sits in his parents’ garage. That is also where Zach learned a lot of his skills, beside his father, Ken Kosienski, who has been working on a 1969 Road Runner. “He would show me how to do everything. We’d spend a lot of time together,” Zach says. “He’s the reason I got into this whole deal.” Zach hopes it will be a good start to a career in mechanical engineering, which he plans to pursue this fall at North Dakota State University.
